February 2026: Royal Visit and Renewed Commitment to the PATRIZIA Akelius Vocational Training Centre in Bumthang

During a recent visit to the Kingdom of Bhutan, the PATRIZIA Foundation strengthened its enduring support for the Foundation’s Bhutan Programme, which operates under royal patronage. Wolfgang Egger, the Foundation’s founder, travelled to Thimphu to reconnect with valued local partners and to underline a shared dedication to widening access to education and opportunity.

A particularly significant occasion during the visit was the audience with Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck. Discussions also took place with the Foundation’s established national partners, the Gyalyum Charitable Trust (GCT) and RENEW. The collective commitment to sustained collaboration in the education sector was formally renewed through the ceremonial signing of a Deed of Partnership Reaffirmation at Gawailing Happy Home—a women’s refuge established under Her Majesty’s patronage to support women and children affected by domestic violence.

At the heart of the partnership lies a shared ambition to expand educational prospects for children and young people across Bhutan. Particular attention is being given to the rural region of Bumthang, where vocational training opportunities—especially for girls—have historically been limited. In cooperation with RENEW and the Akelius Foundation, the PATRIZIA Foundation is developing the Bumthang Vocational Training Centre as a flagship initiative. This new facility will reinforce the programme’s long-term strategy of equipping young people with practical skills and strengthening sustainable livelihoods, while opening meaningful educational pathways for girls and young women.

Reflecting on the visit, Wolfgang Egger remarked:
“Education remains one of the most effective instruments for creating opportunity. Our continued presence in Bhutan demonstrates the strength of our partnerships and our joint resolve to dismantle obstacles, enabling young people—particularly girls—to fulfil their aspirations.”

The visit represents a further milestone in a partnership defined by mutual trust, long-term vision and a shared sense of responsibility for the next generation in Bhutan.

October 2025: Shaping the Future – Workshop on 5-Year Planning at the Vocational Training Centre Bumthang

On the 7th and 8th of October, a joint workshop with our project partners took place in Thimphu to develop the 5-year plan for the Vocational Training Centre Bumthang. The first day focused on welcoming the participants, presenting the project partnership, and reviewing the progress made so far. In addition, key foundations for the further implementation were introduced and discussed, followed by an insight into the construction plans and the next steps.

On the second day, participants worked in three expert groups on the topics of Curriculum, Finance & Sustainability, and Impact & Monitoring. The results were compiled in group presentations and integrated into an overarching 5-year work plan. The workshop thus provided a valuable opportunity to jointly structure the coming years of the project.

October 2025: Project Trip to Bhutan – Insights into the Culture and Personal Exchange with Project Partners

In October, our program team, together with other Bhutan experts, had the special opportunity to visit the fascinating Kingdom of Bhutan. The purpose of the trip was to meet our partner organizations RENEW (Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women) and the Gyalyum Charitable Trust (GCT) in person and to work together on the further development of the planned Vocational Training Centre for children and young adults in the rural region of Bumthang.

A tour of Thimphu – the capital of the Himalayan kingdom – offered fascinating insights into local life. In addition to impressive monastery complexes and stunning landscapes, the visit also provided a glimpse into the traditional way of life—among other things through tasting a typical Bhutanese drink: butter tea with roasted rice.

A highlight of the stay was the visit to our partner organization RENEW. The headquarters not only houses offices and the RENEW Microfinance Institute but also a showroom where products from RENEW projects, such as handwoven clothing and scarves, are sold as part of the Socio-Economic Empowerment Programme. Here, valuable conversations took place, deepening future steps in the collaboration.

On the way to Bumthang, where the team, together with representatives from the national authority, the Office for Natural Resource Management, and an energy supply company, inspected the site for our KinderHaus, they crossed a mountain pass at around 4,000 meters altitude—a breathtakingly scenic moment. A shared dinner with representatives from RENEW and GCT provided additional space for personal exchange and strengthening the partnership.

We thank our partners for their warm hospitality!

May 2025: Happy Birthday!

The PATRIZIA Foundation warmly congratulates Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, and expresses its heartfelt thanks for the trust placed in our partnership to strengthen vocational education for young people in Bhutan.

We are especially delighted by the visible progress on site in Bumthang – above all, the construction of the new access road, for which we extend our sincere thanks to the Gyalyum Charitable Trust.

April 2025: Bhutanese monastery festival Paro Tshechu full of spirituality, dance and colour

Tshechu, meaning “tenth day” in Dzongkha, Bhutan’s national language, is a vibrant religious festival held to honour Guru Rinpoche and seek his blessings. The celebration features traditional masked and costumed dances, rich in symbolism and spiritual meaning.

Every district (Dzongkhag) in Bhutan hosts its own Tshechu at different times throughout the year, with the Paro and Thimphu Tshechus being the most renowned. On these festive days, people dress in their finest gho and kira, gather with family and friends, and celebrate with food, laughter, and prayer.

December 2024: Start of construction for the access road to the project site

We are delighted to announce that construction of the access road to the future PATRIZIA Vocational Training Centre in Bumthang has officially begun. This marks a significant milestone in the realisation of our project and brings us one step closer to our goal of creating better educational opportunities for young people in Bhutan.

September 2018: Panel discussion with the Queen Mother of Bhutan

At a top-notch panel discussion headlined “Foundation work in an international context,” the groundwork for our new educational initiative in Bhutan was set. The Queen Mother of Bhutan and her 2004-founded RENEW charity were among the participants. This is the only organization in the nation that provides a safe haven, particularly for women and children who are vulnerable to abuse. The PATRIZIA Vocational Training Centre in Bumthang is a new project that Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck indicated she would like to begin with us in the Himalayas.

A unique occasion—and the beginning of a successful collaboration!

Event 1. PATRIZIA Foundation Talk - Handshake Her Majesty Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck & Wolfgang Egger

A Musical Programme with Lasting Impact

Young musicians from the MiSST programme welcomed guest with an opening performance.

Throughout the evening, the students further captivated guests with their performances, including Adoration by Florence Price and selected pieces from The Phantom of the Opera.

An Evening of Shared Vision and Personal Stories

In his welcoming speech, founder Wolfgang Egger talked about the importance of investing in young people and creating opportunities that allow them to thrive — academically, personally and socially. Ambassador Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber delivered a passionate speech on the importance of protecting arts education in the UK, particularly at a time when music and creative subjects continue to face significant cuts within the school system. He spoke movingly about the responsibility to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to creativity, culture and music education.

Chairwoman of the Board Astrid Gabler, together with Board Member James Muir, reflected on their recent visit to one of the programme’s partner schools. James shared how deeply a passionate music teacher had influenced him during his own school years and how this experience continues to shape his belief in the importance of the support in education infrastructure.

Rachel Landon, CEO MiSST, brought the programme vividly to life through inspiring footage and powerful stories from participating students, offering guests a meaningful glimpse into the daily impact of the initiative.

One of the evening’s most memorable moments came from Rain Spiegel-Johnson, a former participant of the programme, who shared her personal story and reflected on the impact music education has had on her life. Growing up in a low-income household, opportunities to take part in extracurricular arts education were often out of reach, leaving her feeling excluded from experiences many others could access. Through MiSST, however, she discovered a creativity and confidence that had long remained hidden.

Speaking about her experience, she described music not only as a form of artistic expression, but also as a powerful sense of belonging:

“Through music, I discovered not only artistry, but the profound feeling of being part of an ensemble so unified, disciplined and unwaveringly beautiful.”

She also emphasized the broader importance of the programme, calling MiSST “an outstanding microcosm for the future of music and the arts in this country.”

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and our Ambassador, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, for the “Thrive Cubed with Music” evening in support of music education in the UK — and for your shared commitment to creating new opportunities for young people through the power of music!

PATRIZIA Music Programme

With the PATRIZIA Music Programme, the PATRIZIA Foundation continues its commitment to educational support and equal opportunities across Europe. The programme was established to provide children and young people from disadvantaged communities in the United Kingdom with access to high-quality music education and to open new pathways for their personal and academic development. In partnership with MiSST, the programme supports schools in Morecambe and Manchester by providing classical musical instruments, professional music tuition and regular performance opportunities. Over the course of three years, the PATRIZIA Foundation is funding 300 instruments, creating long-term access to cultural education and helping young people build brighter futures through the transformative power of music.
